Weekly river log for young GearHeads

The River Observer Club is a simple habit for kids who already love the Blackstone. Each week you pick one safe spot, a bridge railing, a towpath bench, or a park overlook, and you write what the water looks like, what moved along the bank, and what trash you notice without touching anything sharp. You are not judging the river. You are building a notebook that shows how the valley changes through the seasons.
Start from the GearHeads home page when you need the big picture map of activities, then come back here to keep your river column steady. Parents and leaders can help by choosing sites with clear sight lines, railings, and room to step back from the edge.
How to run a five minute observation
- Write the date, air temperature, and sky in one line.
- Describe water color and surface texture in plain words, for example tea brown with small ripples or glassy green near the shade.
- Count birds, ducks, or fish rises you actually see during the timer. Skip guesses.
- Note foam lines, plastic bottles, or oil sheen as yes or no, and mark if an adult already reported it to park staff.
- End with one question you want answered next week, such as why foam piles up behind that rock.
Connect the log to other GearHeads work
When you find wrappers stuck in brush, tie the moment to Junior Rangers Keeping Our Park Clean so your crew knows which bags and grabbers to pack next time. If you want more field ideas after the log, open GearHeads Outside for insect sheets, track guides, and printable hunts.
When an adult approves a photo, upload your favorite frame to the GearHead Gallery with the week number in the caption so friends can compare notes.
